In the heart of South Tyrol's wine-growing region around Bolzano, Lagrein and Vernatsch thrive on sun-drenched slopes — delights with an alpine character.

The wine region of Bolzano, in the heart of South Tyrol, is one of Italy’s most historic yet forward-looking wine-growing areas. Its two flagship red varieties are Lagrein and Vernatsch (Schiava). Thanks to warm summer temperatures, cool mountain breezes, and well-drained porphyry and gravel soils, the region produces expressive, terroir-driven wines with a strong local identity.

Lagrein thrives in the deep, fertile soils of the Bolzano basin, yielding powerful wines with dark color and spicy tannins. Vernatsch, on the other hand, flourishes on the sun-drenched slopes of St. Magdalena, where it develops fine fruit, freshness, and drinkability. Approximately 70% of Bolzano’s wine production is red, complemented by 30% white wines such as Pinot Blanc and Sauvignon.

In addition to the well-known cooperatives like the Bolzano Winery, it is the small, quality-focused producers that give Bolzano’s wine scene its distinctive character. Notable examples include the historic Erbhof Unterganzner, the organically farmed Wassererhof, and Pranzegg, a biodynamic estate known for its unfiltered, soulful wines. Also noteworthy are the elegant Waldgries Estate, the urban-style Egger Ramer Winery, and the Muri-Gries Abbey Winery, which continues a long Benedictine winemaking tradition with authenticity and modern craftsmanship.
