The Sangiovese grape variety

Sangiovese is the most defining red grape variety of Central and Northern Italy and forms the backbone of many iconic Tuscan wines. Few grapes express origin, tradition and terroir as clearly as Sangiovese. It is characterised by vibrant acidity, fine-grained tannins and a clean, often elegant structure that gives wines energy and excellent drinkability. Depending on origin and winemaking style, Sangiovese ranges from approachable and fruit-driven to complex and long-lived.

Origin and terroir

The most important growing area for Sangiovese is Tuscany, particularly in regions such as Chianti, Chianti Classico, Montalcino and Montepulciano. The grape is also widely cultivated in Emilia-Romagna, Umbria and parts of Northern Italy. Sangiovese is highly sensitive to terroir: limestone and galestro soils enhance finesse and structure, while warmer sites lead to riper fruit and greater body. This strong connection to place makes Sangiovese especially diverse and expressive.

Ripening and viticulture

Sangiovese ripens from mid-late to late and demands careful vineyard management. Adequate sunlight is essential to achieve full phenolic ripeness while preserving freshness. Excessive yields or unsuitable sites can result in thin or unbalanced wines. High-quality Sangiovese is achieved through yield control, meticulous canopy work and precise harvesting at optimal ripeness.

Style and aromatics

Typical Sangiovese wines show medium colour intensity, pronounced acidity and refined, often firm tannins. Aromas are dominated by red cherry, sour cherry and redcurrant, complemented by floral notes, herbs, spices and subtle earthy nuances. With age, more complex aromas such as leather, tobacco and balsamic tones develop. Rather than opulence, Sangiovese focuses on elegance, precision and structure.

Ageing and winemaking

Sangiovese is vinified both in stainless steel and in wood. Stainless steel highlights freshness and fruit purity, while ageing in large oak casks or carefully used barriques adds depth and complexity. Modern winemaking aims to preserve varietal character and terroir expression without masking the grape’s natural acidity or elegance.
