The Casalferro IGT 2020 by Barone Ricasoli is a distinctive red wine from Tuscany that showcases the expressive character of Merlot. The grapes come from vineyards surrounding Castello di Brolio in the Chianti area, where a combination of limestone-rich alberese soils and sandstone-based terrain adds depth and complexity to the wine. Following temperature-controlled fermentation in stainless steel tanks, the wine matures for approximately 21 months in tonneaux and barriques, achieving an elegant balance between structure and finesse.
Casalferro is made from 100% Merlot, a grape variety that performs exceptionally well in Tuscany, particularly in hillside vineyards with calcareous soils. While Merlot is often known for its soft and approachable style, in the elevated vineyards of Brolio it develops greater freshness, aromatic precision, and complexity. Warm days and cooler nights support slow ripening, helping to preserve balance and vibrant expression in the grapes.
In the glass, Casalferro 2020 shows an intense ruby red colour. The bouquet reveals ripe red fruit, cherry, and wild berry aromas, complemented by balsamic nuances and subtle hints of spice and oak. On the palate, it is full-bodied yet refined, with silky tannins, precise fruit character, and a long, harmonious finish.
