The Riesling Kalkofen 2023 from Bassermann-Jordan originates from the renowned single vineyard “Kalkofen” in Deidesheim, located in the Palatinate, and is classified as a VDP.Grosses Gewächs, representing the top tier of quality. The site is defined by calcareous soils with clay and loam components, which contribute to a precise structure and pronounced minerality.
The designation “Große Lage” within the VDP system refers to Germany’s finest vineyards, comparable to Grand Crus in France. Wines from these sites clearly reflect their terroir and offer excellent ageing potential. The Kalkofen vineyard is particularly known for producing powerful yet elegant Rieslings within the Mittelhaardt area.
Riesling is the most important white grape variety in the Palatinate. Benefiting from the region’s relatively warm climate, it achieves full ripeness while maintaining vibrant acidity. On limestone-rich soils like those in Kalkofen, it develops a particularly precise and mineral-driven style, considered among the most compelling expressions of the variety.
In the glass, the wine shows a clear, bright appearance. Aromas of ripe citrus fruits, white peach, and subtle exotic hints emerge on the nose. On the palate, it is powerful yet refined, supported by lively acidity and a distinct saline-mineral character. The finish is long, concentrated, and finely balanced between fruit and limestone-driven minerality.
