The Chardonnay Malterdinger 2023 from Bernhard Huber is a precise yet distinctly Burgundy-inspired white wine from the Breisgau region in Baden. Around Malterdingen, Chardonnay is grown on calcareous shell limestone and loess soils, which give the wine marked mineral tension and an elegant structure. These soils stylistically recall the great regions of Burgundy and are key to the wine’s terroir-driven character. The mild Breisgau climate, with warm days and cool nights, also ensures an ideal balance between ripeness and freshness.
In this region, Chardonnay has established itself as one of the most exciting white grape varieties. On the limestone-rich vineyards around Malterdingen, it develops a refined balance of fruit, minerality and subtle creaminess. The wine is predominantly aged in oak, adding further depth, structure and fine texture without overshadowing its precise style.
In the glass, it shows a pale golden yellow with brilliant reflections. On the nose, it reveals yellow apple, ripe pear, citrus zest, white flowers and delicate hints of toasted almond and flint. On the palate, it is taut and elegant, with precise acidity, fine texture, mineral freshness and a long, clean finish.
