The Spätburgunder Köndringer Alte Burg GG 2023 from Bernhard Huber is one of Germany’s most compelling Pinot Noirs and beautifully reflects the style of one of the country’s most renowned estates for this grape variety. The Köndringer Alte Burg vineyard in the Breisgau is rooted in shell limestone soils, giving the wine remarkable mineral precision, fine structure and elegant tension. Pinot Noir thrives in these cool, calcareous sites, developing impressive depth and a distinctly Burgundian finesse.
The designation GG stands for Großes Gewächs, the highest classification for dry wines from top-rated single vineyards within the VDP system. This status represents strict grape selection, low yields and excellent ageing potential. The wine is matured for around 16 months in Burgundy-style barriques, partly new oak, adding further complexity and refined tannin structure.
In the glass, it shows a deep ruby red colour. On the nose, it reveals dark cherry, wild berries, rosemary, cedar wood and delicate hints of dark chocolate. On the palate, it is concentrated yet precise, with a silky texture, mineral freshness, fine tannins and a long, elegant finish with outstanding ageing potential.
