Lagrein Riserva DOC
The Lagrein Riserva DOC 2024 from Erbhof Unterganzner offers a distinctive expression of one of South Tyrol’s most traditional red grape varieties. It is made from short- and long-stemmed Lagrein grapes. The vines, averaging around 25 years of age, grow on alluvial soils of porphyry origin and on moraine soils and are trained using the pergola system. Yields are deliberately reduced in July, while the harvest takes place in several stages from the second to the final week of October. After destemming and crushing, fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks, with around ten days of skin contact. Malolactic fermentation follows. The Riserva character is shaped above all by the extended maturation: the wine ages for 18 to 20 months in small second- and third-use oak barrels. It is filtered before bottling. This ageing gives the naturally powerful Lagrein structure additional maturity, depth and presence. In the glass, it shows an intense garnet colour. The nose combines ripe blackberry and forest fruits with notes of coffee and cocoa, along with subtle animal nuances. On the palate, it is well structured and warm, with full tannins, impressive length and a powerful, persistent finish.
