The Sperss Barolo DOP 2021 from Angelo Gaja is one of Piedmont’s most prestigious single-vineyard wines and perfectly embodies the philosophy of one of Italy’s most renowned wineries. The name “Sperss,” derived from the Piedmontese dialect, means “nostalgia” or “deep longing” and pays tribute to the exceptional vineyard site in Serralunga d'Alba, where limestone and marl soils provide ideal conditions for Nebbiolo. Careful hand harvesting, precise vinification, and subsequent aging in oak give the wine remarkable depth, elegance, and outstanding aging potential while preserving the unmistakable identity of its terroir.
In the glass, it displays a deep garnet-red color. The bouquet is layered and complex, revealing aromas of ripe red berries, cherries, and plums, complemented by hints of rose petals, licorice, tobacco, and refined spices. With further bottle aging, elegant balsamic and earthy nuances emerge. On the palate, the wine is powerful yet exceptionally precise, featuring silky tannins, vibrant acidity, and impressive mineral depth. The finish is long, elegant, and multidimensional, highlighting the extraordinary class and remarkable aging potential of this iconic Barolo.
