The Merlot Riserva DOC Freiherr 2022 from Meran Winery is a powerful yet elegant red wine sourced from selected vineyards on the Freiberg above Merano. Made from 100% Merlot, the vines grow at around 330 m a.s.l. on light, well-drained moraine soils that favour low yields and highly concentrated, ripe grapes. The designation “Riserva” indicates careful vineyard selection and extended ageing: after 10–15 days of maceration and malolactic fermentation, the wine matures for about 16 months in barriques and large oak casks. This long maturation period gives the Freiherr additional depth, complexity and excellent ageing potential.

In the glass, it shows a deep, impressive garnet red. The nose reveals a complex, fruit-driven bouquet with aromas of morello cherry and blackberry, complemented by hints of liquorice and dark chocolate. On the palate, the wine is elegant, dense and harmonious, featuring well-integrated tannins, ripe fruit and a rounded, supportive structure. The finish is long, spicy and persistent, underscoring its character as a serious, long-lived Riserva.
