The St. Magdalener DOC Waldgrieshof 2025 from Waldgries Estate beautifully expresses the character of one of South Tyrol’s most traditional red wines. The vineyards are located on the steep slopes of St. Magdalena above Bolzano, where warm sunshine and cool evening winds create ideal conditions for elegant yet expressive red wines. The blend is based primarily on Schiava (Vernatsch), complemented by a smaller proportion of Lagrein, as is typical for classic St. Magdalener wines. While Schiava contributes freshness, drinkability and delicate fruit, Lagrein adds depth, structure and subtle spice.

It is particularly on the hillsides of St. Magdalena that Schiava reaches one of its finest expressions. The porphyry-rich soils and unique microclimate lend the wine finesse, character and remarkable elegance. The winemaking approach aims to preserve the regional identity and lightness of the grape varieties while maintaining depth and complexity. In the glass, the wine shows a bright ruby-red colour. The bouquet reveals aromas of cherries, red berries and violets, complemented by delicate almond notes and subtle hints of spice. On the palate, the St. Magdalener is juicy and harmonious, with elegant fruit, soft tannins and refreshing balance leading to a smooth and lingering finish.
