Fiasconaro – Castelbuono, Sicily
What began in 1953 as a small café and pastry shop in Piazza Margherita in Castelbuono has grown into one of the world's most renowned names in panettone. In the heart of the Madonie Natural Park, in the hills above Cefalù, the Fiasconaro family gives the classic Milanese Christmas cake a distinctly Sicilian character: oranges, almonds, pistachios, sweet Marsala and, above all, manna, the sweet sap of ash trees growing in the surrounding mountains. The result is a collection of slow-leavened panettoni with a Mediterranean soul, now highly sought after even in northern Italy. Today, Fiasconaro sells more panettone in Milan, the birthplace of this iconic Christmas speciality, than in Palermo.
