The Lagrein Riserva DOC Praepositus 2022 from Abbazia di Novacella Winery is a highly expressive South Tyrolean red wine that showcases this native grape variety in its most elegant and age-worthy form. The grapes come from selected vineyards in Gries near Bolzano at 260 metres above sea level, one of the historic benchmark sites for Lagrein in South Tyrol. The sandy-clay alluvial soils with quartz porphyry give the wine depth, mineral tension and pronounced structure. It is precisely in Gries that Lagrein develops its signature dark fruit, firm tannins and precise freshness.

The Praepositus line represents the winery’s top selections from the finest vineyards, with extended ageing and excellent cellaring potential. As a Riserva, the wine is matured for 24 months in French oak barriques and tonneaux, developing greater complexity, riper tannins and subtle oak nuances. In the glass, it shows a deep purple-red colour with an almost black core. The bouquet reveals intense aromas of dark cherry, wild berries and delicate chocolate notes. On the palate it is juicy, structured and layered, supported by fine fruit sweetness, pronounced tannins and lively acidity, leading into a long and elegant finish.
