Lagrein DOC Mirell 2023 from Ansitz Waldgries is made entirely from Lagrein grapes grown on vines more than 40 years old. Two thirds of the grapes come from St. Magdalena near Bolzano, where glacial gravel and weathered porphyry soils predominate. The remaining third comes from Auer and grows on alluvial soils. These different origins combine concentration and elegance with structure and power. A small portion of the grapes is harvested later.

Maceration on the skins can last for up to 35 days in large vats, with some of the grapes left undestemmed. The wine then matures for one year in barriques, followed by a further 18 months of bottle ageing. Mirell was first produced in 1999 and is made only in particularly suitable vintages. In the glass, it shows a deep purple-red colour. The bouquet recalls ripe black cherry, forest floor and fine herbs, complemented by mature aromatic nuances. On the palate, it is dense and elegant, with fine, tightly knit tannins, pronounced structure and persistent power.
