The Riesling Rotschiefer 2023 from Sorentberg is a distinctive white wine from Germany's Mosel region, beautifully expressing the unique characteristics of its terroir. The winery is a joint project between Tobias Treis and Ivan Giovanett of the South Tyrolean winery Castelfeder, who together have revived a historic vineyard near Reil. The steep, south-facing vineyards are distinguished by their rare Wissenbach red slate soils containing fossilised shells. The cool microclimate of the side valley and the exceptional soil composition shape the unmistakable character of this Riesling. Following careful hand harvesting and gentle processing, fermentation takes place partly spontaneously in traditional wooden barrels. Subsequent ageing on the fine lees gives the wine additional depth and expression. In the glass, it displays an elegant straw-yellow colour with golden hues. Its complex bouquet combines fresh citrus aromas with vineyard peach and delicate wild herbs. On the palate, it impresses with juicy fruit, vibrant acidity and pronounced minerality. A harmonious, lingering finish completes the tasting experience.
