The Riesling 1000 Alte Reben 2020 comes from the Reiler Sorentberg, an exceptional steep vineyard situated in a cool side valley of the Mosel. Tobias Treis and Ivan Giovanett began restoring the site in 2012 after it had lain abandoned for more than 25 years. Covering a total of 9.48 hectares, the Sorentberg is entirely south-facing, with extremely steep gradients averaging between 80 and 110%. One of its defining features is the rare red Wissenbach slate with shell inclusions, a distinctive soil type unique within the Mosel.
During the restoration work, almost 1,000 old, ungrafted Riesling vines were discovered in the highest and steepest part of the vineyard. After decades of neglect, the vines were carefully cleared of dense vegetation and brought back into cultivation through painstaking manual work. Their exact planting year remains unknown. In the glass, the 2020 displays a golden-yellow colour. The bouquet combines ripe peach with honey, caramel, candied fruit and spicy nuances. Rich, round and full-bodied on the palate, it is balanced by lively acidity that complements the generous fruit and creates a harmonious overall impression.
