The Piwi Cuvée Gandfels BIO 2019 by
Thomas Niedermayr combines innovative
PIWI grape varieties with the alpine character of South Tyrol, showcasing the potential of sustainable winemaking in the Überetsch area. The cuvée originates from the Gandberg estate near Eppan, where mineral-rich dolomite and limestone soils together with cool alpine breezes create freshness, tension and refined minerality. As a PIWI wine, Gandfels is made from disease-resistant grape varieties such as
Cabernet Cortis and Cabernet Cantor, allowing for particularly natural organic viticulture.
Unlike many traditional red blends based on international varieties, Gandfels develops an individual personality shaped by alpine precision and strong regional identity. The PIWI grapes contribute not only to sustainability in the vineyard, but also bring aromatic depth, freshness and structure to the wine. Spontaneous fermentation and extended ageing in wooden barrels further enhance complexity and texture.
In the glass, the Gandfels 2019 displays a deep ruby red colour with vivid clarity. The bouquet reveals aromas of dark forest berries, red currants, alpine herbs and delicate spicy nuances, accompanied by subtle earthy and mineral notes. On the palate, the wine is fresh, elegant and layered with fine tannins, juicy fruit and a lightly saline minerality. The long finish combines alpine freshness with spicy depth, making Gandfels a distinctive PIWI red wine with remarkable character.
