Lagrein Riserva Abtei
The Lagrein Riserva Abtei Muri 2024 combines the long winemaking tradition of the Muri-Gries monastery winery with the distinctive character of Lagrein, a native grape variety of South Tyrol. It belongs to the prestigious “Abtei Muri” range, which has represented a selection of outstanding wines from the monastery estate's finest vineyards since 1989. The focus is on the origin of the grapes, meticulous vineyard management and a commitment to quality throughout the winemaking process.
The grapes come from two monastery-owned vineyards in the historic Gries-Moritzing district of Bolzano, situated at an altitude of 250 to 280 metres. The soils consist of alluvial deposits from the Talvera River and surrounding streams, underlain by Bolzano quartz porphyry. Following temperature-controlled fermentation in stainless steel tanks and malolactic fermentation, the wine matures in small oak barrels. This ageing process gives the Lagrein additional depth and a harmonious structure. As a Riserva, this Lagrein is distinguished by an extended maturation period, which enhances its structure, complexity and elegance. Careful ageing in oak barrels contributes to the harmonious development of its aromas and ageing potential.
In the glass, the Lagrein Riserva displays an intense, dark garnet-red colour. Its complex bouquet combines aromas of ripe berries, cherries and barberries with spicy notes of tobacco, leather, liquorice, eucalyptus and forest floor. On the palate, it is powerful yet velvety, with well-integrated acidity, pronounced tannins and a long, elegant finish.
